Great Hair Care Tips

If you watch the tabloids, you know that even the stars have bad hair days. It just seems that when the professional stylists are out of the picture, it is inherently human to have a less than glamorous mane. But you can do your part to stay ahead of the battle by following these great tips for hair care.

1. Use a professional conditioner that is formulated for your specific hair type. While you can skimp a little on the shampoo, a good, professional conditioner is a must have. Look for products in salons that are customized for your hair type. For instance: If you have color or a perm, choose a conditioner that is for chemically processed hair. And stay away from those all-in-one shampoo and conditioner combos.

2. Choose a cut tailored to your face and body shape. The number one mistake that people make when choosing a new hairstyle is to pick a style based on popularity rather than how it will enhance their features. Always choose a new cut based on how it will enhance or detract from your facial features and build. If you have broad shoulders, choose a full-bodied cut over a close cropped head hugging doo.

3. Don’t forget your UV protectants. Just as your skin gets damaged by wind and sun, so does your hair. To combat this, look for finishing products such as mousses, gels and sprays that block UV rays.

4. Keep your appointments. Did you know that your hair will split faster than it will grow? You need to get a trim every 6 to 8 weeks, even if it’s just a micro trim. A good hairdresser makes them good because they know what to leave on the head, not take off.

5. Leave chemicals to the professionals. There is a reason why beauticians need to go to school to learn how to handle chemicals and hair processes. You can do irreparable damage with these products even if the package says that it’s way easy. And even if you don’t make your hair fall out, you could end up looking like a clown and paying a stylist big bucks to fix your mess. (Note: Most stylists charge double the rate for corrective color than they do for normal color processes)

6. Get color for interest and body. Every cut needs a little bit of color to make it truly breathtaking. No matter whether your taste is subtle or dramatic, you can add interest and volume to your tresses with a color process. Highlights, lowlights, all over color, gray coverage, you name it, it’s all good for your look.

7. Do weekly conditioning treatments. Even if your hair is extremely healthy, it is constantly on the attack from wind, sun, cold and heat. During the summer months, your hair is battered even more when it absorbs chlorine and other chemicals from your pool.

8. Get an ionic ceramic flat iron. Instead of frying your hair with a conventional metal plated flat iron. Straighten your tresses, add shine and infuse moisture with one of the a negative ionic flat irons. We personally use T3 irons for all our work.

9. Choose your styling products wisely. Avoid products that leave build-up on your hair. If you see white gunk, that means that your product is not water-soluble and may be coating your hair shaft. Build-up causes limpness, breakage and inability to curl not to mention the white flakes.

10. Did you know that if you use a towel after your shower to dry your hair you are causing split ends and adding static electricity to your hair. Don’t rub the towel back and forth over your hair, scrunch the towel around your hair like your would scrunch crackers in your soup.

The Xperia X10 by Sony Ericsson

The well received Sony Xperia X10 has had a little facelift. In an attempt to broaden its appeal the manufacturers have made the device attractively smaller, but at the same time somehow incorporated a Qwerty keypad within its now tiny frame.

Although the dimensions of the phone have been played with, the User Interface has wisely been left alone. Running the excellent Timescape UI the menus look very sleek. In an effort to keep the home screens minima Timescape neatly groups relevant information together. For example, rather than having separate functions for e mails messages social networking etc, simply calling up a contact now displays message and e mail history along with social networking updates as well as other information. This idea works well, and of course there are individual applications available should you need them. The operating system of this handset is Google Android, hence the various pre installed apps including Google Mobile and Google Talk. Multimedia playback is supported thanks to the inbuilt Mediascape widget. This supports audio and video and covers a range of formats. Video you have recorded on the handset can also be displayed, or if you prefer uploaded direct to YouTube. Making all of these features run quickly and smoothly is an 800 Mhz processor.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro comes with 128mb of on board memory, but the inclusion of a microSD slot allows upgrading of this up to 16GB. This memory comes into handy for the media features which include the camera facility, which captures images at a high resolution of 5 million pixels. Throw into the mix video capture and you can see that the handset is really well specified.

It would be unfair to talk about the Xperia X10 Mini Pro without talking about its size. Weighing just 120 grammes and measuring 90 x 52 x 17mm, the unit is very small considering how powerful this phone actually is, being more similar in measurements to one of the more feature free fashion phones rather than a fully functioning smartphone. The 2.55″ Capacitive touchscreen responds very well to the slightest touch, as well as showing a crisp 240 x 320 resolution. Throw into the equation the 16 million colours and you have a quality of screen that matches the alrady impressive behind the scenes features. The full Qwerty keypad slides out when you turn the phone onto its side, meaning easy composition of messages and e mails. There are four rows of keys, and although small, the keypad is still larger than the one found on the palm pre.

As far as phones to look forward to in 2010 go, the Xperia X10 Mini Pro is really a frontrunner. It will satisfy the smartphone lovers and the stlye lovers alike thanks to its small frame, sleek finish and impressive feature list, backed up by the heavyweight Google Android operating system. This really is a phone to watch this year.

Skin care tips for Black Men.

The man of the 90s should be just as concerned about his appearance as his female counterpart. Gone are the days when it was considered macho for men to have rugged skin to match their personalities. Women aren’t impressed with bad complexions in men any more than men admire women with bad skin.

While today men overall are more aware of the importance of taking care of their bodies, far too many still neglect their skin.

A major skin problem affecting Black men who shave is that of ingrown hair which results when curly or kinky hair grows back into the skin. The problem most often affects the face and front crease of the neck, but can also occur on the back of the neck and the scalp. The skin may become infected with bacteria and, consequently, form bumps over the hair. The subsequent irritation causes the skin to darken, and when severe, permanent scarring may result. Continuing to shave aggravates the problem, for often the skin is broken and bleeding occurs.

Dermatologists and skin-care experts offer these tips to help Black men combat the problem of ingrown hair:

If you can, grow a beard and totally eliminate the problem. However, this is not a viable alternative for many men in the military or those who work in corporate America.

Some experts advise against shaving daily unless absolutely necessary. The more you shave, the greater the chance for hairs to grow into the skin.

* When shaving, don’t rush but take your time to avoid nicks and scars.

* By not shaving too closely you’ll lessen the chances of hair growing back into the skin.

* Some men find it helpful to lift hairs onto the surface of the skin with a sewing needle sterilized in alcohol.

Making Room For a New Men’s Fashion

Doug Black has found himself in a tight squeeze more times than he cares to remember. One day, he got caught in the rain without an umbrella and was unable to run. When his colleagues sat in a circle, the 23-year-old English teacher from Portland Ore couldn’t cross his legs. And when he tried to jaywalk while in Beijing for work, he couldn’t hop the median divider with his friends.

“I had to walk half a mile down the street on my own to use the crosswalk,” he says.

His jeans were too tight. But he has no plans to buy a looser style. “Discomfort comes with the territory,” he says.

Skinny jeans, with tapered legs and narrow-peg ankles, seemed like a flash in the pan when they appeared in stores a few years ago. They seemed more suited to women. Today, though, sales of men’s skinny jeans are going strong, and mass brands Gap and Levi’s are getting in on the action.

Explanations abound for why men would want to wear jeans that look so uncomfortable and impractical. Some fashion observers say skinny jeans’ tight hold on certain men stems in part from the wearers’ desire to show off their gym-sculpted bodies. Then, too, denim brands, retailers and men’s fashion magazines have relentlessly promoted skinny jeans. And pop stars like Justin Timberlake and Kanye West, by wearing skinny jeans, have given something resembling permission for style-conscious young men to wear them.

But men are discovering, as women have long known, that the style can be unforgiving. One sometimes must diet and wiggle, tug and stretch to squeeze into a pair of tight jeans.

So the makers of men’s jeans are trying to be more accommodating. Levi Strauss & Co. added room in the seat and thigh in its newest skinny jeans for men. True Religion added what it calls a “four-way stretch” spandex material to its line of men’s jeans selling for between $172 and $398. (Worried that men consider spandex in anything other than gym clothes to be for women only, it isn’t advertising that detail.) True Religion says 15% of the top-selling men’s jeans in its own retail stores were “slim leg” jeans in the first quarter of 2009, up from 11% in the year-ago first quarter.

A Levi spokeswoman says: “Over the past several months, our men’s skinny jeans styles have been among our most requested and top-selling jeans.”

Men’s premium jeans, a small part of the overall market, have been a bright spot in the current recession. Men’s jeans sales totaled $5.31 billion in the U.S. for the 12 months ended April 30, according to market researcher NPD Group, down 2% from a year earlier. But sales of fashion jeans priced $50 and up rose 8%. NPD doesn’t track sales by style.

7 for All Mankind, whose men’s jeans sell for between $155 and $225, widened the thigh and elongated the distance from the crotch to the top of the waistband on the new skinny men’s jeans it will start selling this month. After men complained that the thighs on its jeans were too tight, the label, owned by VF Corp., had male employees at its Los Angeles headquarters walk, squat and bend in prototypes of the new look. It sold the style, called “Jared,” at its Los Angeles stores as a test. Customers liked it, says Rosella Giuliani, vice president of design and merchandising, so it is going national.

“Guys don’t want leggings,” says Patrick Robinson, head designer at Gap Inc. Gap’s new men’s slim jeans, which it calls “Authentic,” contain three-quarters of an inch more fabric in the thigh and 1½-inches more in the knee than its current skinny jeans do.

The brands also hope the changes will make their skinny jeans appeal beyond the urban hipsters, skater-types, rockers and hip-hop fans who already wear them to men with meatier legs. “I’m an avid cyclist and need to have more room in my jeans because my quads are getting worked on so much,” says Michael Ball, co-founder of premium denim brand Rock & Republic, which late last year added stretch to its men’s skinny jeans.

Rock & Republic says sales of its men’s skinny denim over the past several months rose 26% over last year’s figures.

Though the jeans may be getting easier to wear, the look isn’t easy to pull off. The trick is to wear skinny jeans with slim-fitting shirts and pointy-toed dress shoes or dressy boots. Any squarish, loose or, worse still, boxy-fit sweater or shirt can make a man’s proportions look out of whack and his legs way too skinny.

Dozens of groups opposed to men wearing skinny jeans have formed on Facebook with names like “Men Should Not Wear Skinny Jeans.” “Women are supposed to wear skinny jeans,” says Stacy Leach, 32, an accounting representative with a property-management firm near Washington. She says she started her own Facebook group against men wearing skinny jeans a couple of months ago because she was “so sick” of seeing them.

The rapper Jay-Z taunts skinny-jeans-wearing rappers as effeminate in his recent song “D.O.A.” Sample lyric: “You boys jeans too tight, you colors too bright, your voice too light.” A spokeswoman said the rapper wasn’t available to comment.

Jerry Seinfeld poked fun at slim-fitting jeans in a 1996 episode of “Seinfeld.” The Kramer character barges into Jerry’s apartment wearing a pair of jeans so tight he is forced to adopt an unnatural walk. When Kramer has trouble taking off the jeans, Jerry tries to yank them off by the legs. The actor playing Kramer, Michael Richards, injured himself slightly during the filming of that scene.

“As Jerry recalls, it was just a minor little muscle spasm that annoyed him for a couple of days,” says Mr. Seinfeld’s publicist, Elizabeth Clark Zoia. “But they made our point about men’s jeans that require too much effort.”

Ioan Rosca says it took him three months to break in a pair of skinny jeans made by William Rast, the fashion line started by pop star Justin Timberlake. “It was a little hard to move at first,” says the 19-year-old college student from Irvine, Calif. He bought the jeans a waist size bigger than he normally wears to get them to fit and says he walks a little slower in them. For his efforts, he still gets some teasing from his male friends. “They say, ‘You kind of look like a chick,’ ” he says.

Kevin Moran, a 6-foot-tall, 200-pound, 47-year-old New Yorker, says he gets compliments from men and women whenever he wears his low-rise skinny jeans. “I don’t know why some men are so anti-skinny jeans,” he says. “I’m sure they think they look just fine in their low baggy jeans that they have to hold up or else they will fall down.”

Are shoeses an inelastic fashion accessory?

Dear Economist:
We need shoes come rain or shine and the more shoes we have, the better prepared we are for the unpredictable circumstances we face in our daily lives. Because of this, we should buy shoes no matter how much they increase in price, because their demand will always exist – we can’t walk around barefoot. Perhaps I’m just trying to convince myself that £60 on a pair of shoes is a solid investment.
Shoe-shopper

Dear Shoe-shopper:

I am unschooled in The Way of the Shoe and hesitate to offer my usual unambiguous advice, but I draw the line at the use of the politician’s favourite euphemism, “investment”. I regard my lunch money as well spent, but let’s not pretend that my lunch is a hundred shares in General Electric, shall we?

To answer your question, shoes are “income inelastic” if you do not cut back much on shoes when your income falls. They are “price inelastic” if you do not cut back much on shoes when their price rises. Something tells me you think shoes are inelastic in both respects.

I would argue that a more pertinent term here is “diminishing marginal utility”. The first pair of shoes protects your feet. All subsequent pairs of shoes are merely variety. I write without fear of contradiction when I suggest that the more shoes any one person has, the more time each pair will spend at home in the shoe cupboard.

In short, whether you are wise to spend £60 on new shoes rather depends on whether you now have no shoes (the scenario you gesture towards) or whether you have a spare bedroom full of them, which I fear may be the truth…

Adult Dating Violence

The facts. According to The Safe Space One in three teens experience some kind of abuse in their romantic relationships, including verbal and emotional abuse. (The Safe Space, Relationships 101, 2007.) Perhaps even more alarming, 1 in 4 teenage girls who have been in relationships reveal they have been pressured to perform oral sex or engage in intercourse. (Ibid.) And it’s not just happening to girls. More and more boys are reporting similar behavior, but cultural assumptions may make it even harder for them to seek and receive help. What kinds of warning signs should we be teaching kids to look for?

Red flags. There are certain themes common to abusive dating relationships. They include:

  • Control. Does your partner: Use anger, intimidation, and jealousy to control your behavior? Try to control how you dress, what you eat, and who you talk to? Constantly check up on you or accuse you of being unfaithful? Make you afraid to disagree because you fear what may happen if you do? Threaten to reveal personal information if you don’t follow orders? Threaten to kill him/herself or someone else if you break up with him/her?
  • Belittling. Does your partner: Call you mean or vulgar names? Intentionally disrespect or humiliate you in front of others? Constantly criticize you and put you down? Purposely ignore you to punish you for behavior he/she doesn’t like? Insult your friends or your family? Make you feel as if nothing you do is right, or enough?
  • Isolation. Does your partner: Force you to drop activities you enjoy because he/she is not a part of them? Prevent you from having contact with your friends and family? Forbid you from talking to other guys/girls? Try to control where you go? Do you feel as if you can no longer have your own life?
  • Physical Abuse. Does your partner: Use threats to harm you to control your behavior? Throw things at you or pull your hair when he/she is angry? Hit, punch, or choke you? Purposely destroy your property to punish you? Force you to drink or do drugs? Force you into sexual behavior you don’t want to do?

The honeymoon phase. After an abusive incident, many abusers enter the honeymoon phase. Often they will apologize profusely, offer gifts, and make extensive promises about changing their behavior. This leads many victims to think that “It won’t happen again,” which makes it less likely that they will end the relationship.

Emotional roller-coaster. Victims of dating violence may experience a wide range of emotional responses to this abuse. They may feel shame and embarrassment, which may preclude their seeking help. They often experience extreme levels of stress, fear, anxiety, and depression. Many believe their abusers when they say that it’s “their fault,” and wind up experiencing self-blame and guilt. Still more lack the self-esteem to realize that they deserve a healthier relationship; they stay because they feel they can’t do any better.

How you can help. Educate kids about intervention services. Contact your local or domestic abuse or victims services center to see what kind of help they can provide. When threats or violence are present, girls may need the protection of law enforcement. Parents may not have all the information about their daughter’s relationship: help bring them into the loop. Also check out The National Teen Dating Abuse Helpline or Break The Cycle for more resources, including curriculum materials and information on how to draw up safety plans.

The changing state of the saree

Pairing neon Converse shoes with a floral sari may sound like a fashion felony characteristic of Rakhi Sawant. But if the sari is draped over skinny jeans instead of a petticoat, the footwear suddenly gets unlikely legitimacy.

An army of fashion designers and their troupes of devotees are trying to reinvent the Indian nine-yard. Anamika Khanna recently crafted sari pyjamas with crushed muslin pallus and replaced petticoats with pyjamas, Wendell Rodricks’ sari gown has him deluged with requests from “celebrity ladies” who can’t get enough of the built-in choli and split pallu and Nida Mahmood’s deadly combo of jeans and saris has been turning heads since the fashion week. Satya Paul twisted and turned the sari around by throwing on trousers and Ravi Bajaj took Indo-eastern fusion to a whole level with the poncho sari.

Before scissors were whipped out, designers swore their allegiance to the “eternal symbol of grace and style”. Some pledged not to mess with the silhouette and others promised to keep it simple. Rodricks, who introduced the jersey sari as well as the backless sari gown, says he always has the sari in mind because it’s the only drape in the world that requires close to no effort to look sensual, fluid and striking. “I love to blend the aesthetics of the Indian sari with a red carpet-style, Western-gown look because together it makes for an impressive international statement,” he says.

Nida Mahmood, whose signature style is to pair skinny jeans, kitschy shoulder-enhanced blouses with funky saris, says she never messes with the length and breadth of the sari but opts for lighter fabrics. According to her, the key is in the drape – skip the first round of draping and start with the pleats instead. “The pleats start on the left leaving the right leg to show off the jeans,” she says. Mahmood says the idea of the neo sari is to “speak a language relevant to the current times.” “When you tell a story which has relevance to the contemporary thought, it becomes that much easier to drive the point home. In our daily life, we find it cumbersome to wear a sari which has now been replaced by the business suit. I feel the younger generation will embrace the sari in the modern context,” she says. This is where the new-gen saris step in.

Other designers too say the neo sari is a product of changing urban landscapes and lifestyles. Sanjay Kapoor, managing director of Satya Paul, says the trouser sari was invented to improve the “flexibility of the person wearing it” . Kapoor says that a few years after the label was born in 1985, the team realised that “we were a society at the crossroads” . “For 2,000 years, the sari remained untouched. The different weaves and forms are beautiful but times have changed and the customer is evolving,” he says. “The new customer is oriented towards an urban lifestyle with an obvious lack of patience to learn the art of tying a sari,” he adds. According to Kapoor, the ‘internationalisation’ of the sari is a crucial factor. “The essence of this sari stems from the western look that it imparts to its wearer without compromising on the traditional Indian feel,” he says, adding that the trouser sari received overwhelming response, especially in the NRI community.

Satya Paul has a dedicated cell that works to create new forms of the sari. “I’m looking forward to Madonna wearing this sari to help the Indian customer recognise the design strength of our work,” he says. Shaina NC, who is known for inventing incalculable ways of draping the sari, says the reinventions like the lungi or sarong sari are a hit. “I had one client who converted the drape of her wedding sari into a sarong style and another one who used the pallu of her wedding sari to make a jacket,” she says.

The sari has been the designer’s muse for years but sometimes reinvention has resulted in tragedy with the sari resembling a gunnysack. Vijai Singh Katiyar, senior faculty at the National Institute of Design (NID) and author of the book Indian Saris – Traditions, Perspectives and Design, says he enjoys “the zealous explorations with the sari by design leaders in fashion” , but believes that innovation needs to support the intrinsic characteristics of the unstitched sari. “Unfortunately in the India of our times, it is frequently about discarding everything that is old and making choices from the so-called idioms of modernity and progressiveness,” he says. “The sari needs new strategies to make its way into the hearts of the young generation. Attempts to fuse the sari with other formats helps, but designers need to overcome this obsession as early as possible so that their intervention is meaningful,” he says. Sari to say, but there’s still a long way to go.

Wedding Sarees Are Specially Designer To Flaunt Curves

Weddings are the occasion where one has to dress neatly and select best of the attires. And when it is the turn of wedding sarees, they are considered are one of the best attires in the world. Signifying true blend of traditionality and innovation, they are the most sought after piece of art to adorn wedding functions. It is quite understandable that wedding sarees require careful selection. From printed ones to heavily embroidered, these sarees are available at various rates in the market. Ranging between few hundreds to thousands, the price is quoted as per the work done on it.

When it comes to a showing off the style, designs and patterns on the wedding sarees matter a lot. It is because they give a subtle to gorgeously beautiful looks. These days, velvet patchwork, lace work and ribbon work is creating a revolution. They have also been mingled with other kind of patterns to create a style statement. It is because of these trends that wedding sarees are liked above other kind of dresses, be it suits, lehenga or churidar. Apart from this, a variety of wedding sarees available in the market has been catching eyes of the buyers.

The draping styles of wedding sarees are suggested differently for the women. For example, heavier looking women should wear straight-cut and non-flared petticoats to have a slimmer look besides this, they should wear well-set saree. On the other hand, thinner looking women should wear sarees with organza and cotton sarees to look on a medium size. Apart from all this, the selection of color also matters a lot. It makes a woman look beautiful with perfection.

A posh display of sarees can be best seen in wedding functions. In fact, wedding sarees are so intricately woven with stylish forms of work that they look extremely sensuous. Faux and Crape are among the most common and popular saree variety in the market today. It is one of the most sought after sarees because of the finesse in the work done on it. How to Take Care of Your New Tattoos

Now, you have your fresh new tattoo and you want to take good care of it! From this point on your artist is not responsible for any infection or problems you may have with your tattoo if you don’t take proper care of it. It is very important that you follow these guidelines. A really beautiful tattoo can turn into a disaster if the proper aftercare is not taken.

Leave That Bandage Alone!
Your artist took the care to cover up your new tattoo for a very good reason – to keep air-born bacteria from invading your wound. Yes, as pretty as your new tattoo is, it is still a wound. Open flesh is a breeding ground for bacteria and infection. Leave the bandage on for a minimum of two hours. Excitement of having a new tattoo will make you want to remove the bandage so you can show your friends, but your friends will just have to wait until later.

The only exception to this rule is if your artist covered your tattoo with saran wrap or some kind of plastic. This is extremely detrimental to a tattoo, so it should be removed immediately. You’re better off not having any covering than to be suffocating your new tattoo with plastic wrap.

Wash and Treat
After you remove the bandage, you will want to wash your tattoo. Use lukewarm water and mild, liquid antibacterial or antimicrobial soap (Satin and Provon are my highest recommendations. Dial tends to be too harsh – generic brand antibacterial soaps are actually better) to gently wash away any ointment, blood and/or plasma and to completely clean the area. Do not use a washcloth or anything abrasive. Your hand is your best tool in this case. If your tattoo feels slimy and slippery, you have probably been oozing plasma. Try to gently remove as much of this as possible – when the plasma dries on the skin surface, it creates scabs.

Then pat (do not rub) the area firmly with a CLEAN towel or paper towel to get it completely dry. Follow with a very light application of your choice of ointment. A&D vitamin enriched ointment would be my first choice, but if you don’t have any, Bacitracin or a similar antibacterial ointment is acceptable.

Do not use Neosporin. This is a wonderful product for cuts and scrapes but not for tattoos. Some can have an allergic reaction to the Neosporin which causes little red bumps. When the bumps go away so does the ink and you end up with a polka-dotted tattoo.

Specialty Products and Lotions
If you prefer, you can also use a specialty product such as Tattoo Goo or H2Ocean. It’s not necessary, as many over the counter products work just fine, but it’s your choice. Use the products as directed as continue for 3-5 days.

After that, continue to keep it clean, but you can use lotion when needed instead of ointment, to keep the skin soft. Whatever lotion you use, it should be dye and fragrance free. A lot of artists recommend Lubriderm, but I have found that Lubriderm stings when I apply it. Instead, I have had great success with Eucerin. Bathing, Showering, Hot Tubs, and Swimming
Yes, you can (and should!) shower with a new tattoo. It’s OK to get your tattoo wet – just don’t soak it. Submerging your tattoo in a bath or hot tub can cause serious damage, so you’ll want to avoid those for 2-3 weeks, but showering is perfectly fine as long as you don’t saturate your tattoo. If you get soap or shampoo on your tattoo, just remove it quickly with water. Swimming – whether it be a pool, fresh water or salt water – should be avoided for at least 2 weeks.

Scabbing and Peeling
After a few days, you will notice some peeling and possibly a little scabbing. Excessive scabbing could indicate a poorly-done tattoo, but a little is sometimes normal and there is no need to panic. Apply warm moist compresses to the scabs for about 5 minutes 2-3 times a day to soften them and they will eventually come off on their own. (Do not apply ointment or lotion to a softened scab – wait for it to dry) You will also start to itch, just like a sunburn when it begins to heal. The advice here is, don’t pick, and don’t scratch! If the skin itches, slap it. If it is peeling, put lotion on it. And if it is scabbing, just leave it alone. Your tattoo is almost healed, and now is not the time to ruin it!

Protection from the sun
After your tattoo is healed, from now on, you will always want to protect it from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. These can fade and damage a brilliant tattoo very fast. Before spending a lot of time in excessive heat, protect your tattoo with a minimum 30SPF sunblock. This will keep your tattoo vibrant for many years, and it will continue to be a source of great pride.

Read My Hips: These Are Jeans That Fit

THE big issues and tough questions are what concern us here in Style Land. Let other people fret about the recession health care and the future of Conan O’Brien’s pompadour. What troubles us is how the male consumer’s simplest decision somehow became the most difficult and fraught. Why, that is, are blue jeans that most blameless and universal item of apparel, the one thing men always get wrong?

ctually, not every guy messes up, and that includes oldsters like Harrison Ford, who can be seen in the poster for his latest movie, “Extraordinary Measures,” striding urgently in the direction of some imminent crisis while clad in a pair of jeans whose cut and fit make him look more like a contemporary of his co-star, Brendan Fraser, than someone old enough to be that actor’s dad. If the 67-year-old Mr. Ford can somehow find jeans that fall within the Goldilocks parameters of suitable masculine style (not high-waisted or crotch-hugging, not too baggy and not grafted onto one’s legs) why is it that so many middle-aged men end up wearing mommy jeans or pants reminiscent of Ted Danson in “Cheers”?

“Men make so many mistakes” in their choice of denims, said Dan Peres, the editor of Details, the men’s style magazine. Offhand, Mr. Peres cited a list of offenses against what may be the perfect garment (Yves Saint Laurent always said he wished he had invented them) that included bad washes; machine-made wear holes and shredding; the awful bleached-in crease marks called whiskers; rises so high they make a guy look as if he’s wearing Huggies Pull-Ups or so low they create entirely unwelcome dorsal cleavage.

“Really, it should be the easiest style choice a guy has to make, what jeans to wear,” said Mr. Peres, who at 38 is at that dangerous age where one wrong sartorial move can mark you as a person frantically clinging to youth or slumping into middle-age surrender.

But it is not the easiest choice, at least to judge from the abundant Web sites dedicated to the obsessive pursuit of perfect jeans, which, in most cases, online connoisseurs define as something very close to the model Levi’s manufactured just after World War II.

“Something went amok with jeans in the late 1970s,” Charles DiSipio, the owner of History Preservation Associates, a Web distributor of “heritage” jeans, said by phone, “consistent with everything else in our culture.”

From the viewpoint of purists like Mr. DiSipio, who sells a variety of Japanese cult brands like Sugar Cane, the best “dungarees” are the least adorned, the least tampered with, those made from something like the original and durable indigo denim. “Whenever something loses its original use and becomes something for fashion,” Mr. DiSipio said, “the purity and beauty get diluted.”

That dilution began, by his estimation, when jeans were first subjected to bad bleach jobs and were refashioned in dowdy styles that, taken up by a then-young generation of Baby Boomers, are still being worn by those same men. How, he asked, does one account for the way men become trapped in the memory of their finest sartorial moment? What was it about being 17 that makes it a challenge for Matt Lauer, say, or Jerry Seinfeld or Barack Obama to gaze in a mirror and note that the light blue jeans one wore so confidently three decades ago now look a trifle sad?

“It’s like men keeping the same hairstyle for decades,” Mr. Peres said.

You can blame designers for overthinking or retailers for cramming their denim bars with more choices than you’d find behind the sneeze guard at a cheap buffet. You can blame Levi’s for erratic shifts in strategy that turned a simple search for a fresh pair of old reliables into a scavenger hunt.

It sounds simplistic, but to find great-looking jeans now, look first for fit, said Michael Williams, a marketing consultant whose blog, A Continuous Lean, explores peak moments in the history of American male fashion with a reverence that borders on obsession. Mr. Williams starts with jeans whose waistband neither grazes one’s bellybutton nor threatens to expose waxing secrets (or their lack.)

Stick to dark blues and let real wear do the job of distressing your trousers. Say no to whiskers, in other words. Buy jeans rinsed if you cannot stand to break in trousers that initially feel as if they had been cut from a refrigerator box with a utility knife. Whatever you do, steer well away from those pale blue relaxed-fit denims that caused the president so much grief when he was accused of wearing mommy jeans.

“You don’t have to buy jeans at some crazy-expensive place,” said Mr. Williams, whose preferred jeans are custom made by the Jean Shop in the meatpacking district and, at $300, fall within the range of the crazy-expensive. “You don’t have to spend $150 to get a nice-looking pair of jeans,” he said, adding that friends who complimented him on $50 jeans he bought last year were surprised to learn that they were not from some specialty denim cave like Hinoya Plus Mart in Tokyo but from Gap.

That a good fit can be found by men of all ages is well exemplified by Mr. Ford. His jeans in “Extraordinary Measures” — cut lean, dark blue, with no fussy extras and with a modest rise that even men of ordinary fitness might wear without embarrassment — are so correct that retailers should be encouraged to display the movie posters in their denim bars for instructional use.

The fact that his clothes were selected by his longtime costume designer, Bernie Pollack, proves that hipsters have no lock on getting denim right. Mr. Pollack is 74.

“I hate all the designer jeans, the fake treatments and the artificial aging,” said Mr. Pollack, who also outfitted Robert Redford in film for 30 years.

“We tried some of the designer washes from some of the hip stores for the movie,” he said by phone last week from his home in Los Angeles, “but it didn’t fit the character and it didn’t fit with Harrison.”

Ultimately, Mr. Ford and Mr. Pollack settled on a pair of 13MWZ Wranglers (about $32 online) for the star. The secret for Mr. Ford or for an average Joe, Mr. Pollack said, is “to have some bit of style, but still look basic.”

After all, he said, the essential element of jeans style is nonstyle — that and one other thing: They have to fit your rear.
